Breast Revision

WHO IS A GOOD CANDIDATE?

Women who undergo breast augmentation surgery often wish they had opted for either smaller or larger implants.  Sometimes, complications, such as, implant collapse or scar tissue tightening around the implant occur.  Breast revision surgery is an option if you are reconsidering the size of the implants or if the implants themselves have changed.  Other reasons to seek revision surgery include:  silicone leaking from an implant shell as revealed by x-ray; implants have shifted position; changes to breast tissue volume (usually due to weight fluctuations); visible rippling of the implants; or implants are asymmetrical.

WHAT TO EXPECT

You may feel frustration or fear when facing the prospect of having to undergo breast revision surgery even if you are choosing to change the implant size.  Breast revision surgery may involve removing, replacing, or shifting the position of the existing implant(s).  Results may improve when combining a breast lift procedure with a revision surgery.

Revision surgery poses some unique challenges including formation of scar tissue around the implant(s) that were not present during the original augmentation procedure.

RECOVERY

Recovery after breast revision surgery depends on the procedures used to improve your outcome.  Discomfort after revision surgery is usually much less than the discomfort experienced after the original augmentation.  Some additional down-time may be needed to insure repairs and revisions heal properly.
