Blepharoplasty

WHAT IS BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Blepharoplasty is a surgical eyelid procedure to improve the appearance of the eyelids.

Surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both the upper and lower eyelids.

Whether to improve your appearance or to correct a functional eyelid problem, blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) can rejuvenate the area surrounding your eyes.

Eyelid surgery can treat:

• Loose or sagging skin surrounding the eyes that is creating folds or disturbing  the natural contour of the upper eyelids, sometimes impairing vision;
• Fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids;
• Bags under the eyes;
• Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris;
• Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids.

EYELID SURGERY CANDIDATES

• ARE individuals without serious eye conditions;
• are Non-smokers;
• are healthy individuals with NO medical conditions that can impair healing; and have realistic expectations for the results.

Eyelids are part of the face. The appearance of drooping upper eyelids may be due to relaxation of forehead skin and eyebrows. Sometimes,  stretching of the upper eyelid muscle causes drooping eyelids. This condition is eyelid ptosis and requires a different surgical treatment.

Dr. Rafael Antun will evaluate your facial anatomy and make recommendations for the best procedures for you.

WHAT TO EXPECT

After eyelid surgery, recovery will involve the application of cold compresses and lubricating ointments.  In some cases,  your eyes may be loosely covered with gauze.

You will be given specific instructions on how to care for your eyes and how to care for the surgical site, including medications to be taken orally or applied topically to aid in healing, to reduce inflammation, to alleviate swelling and to prevent risks of infection.  You will be given information regarding the removal of bandages and stitches.

Initial healing may include swelling, bruising, eye irritation or dry eyes, and discomfort, especially at the incision site.  You will be instructed to practice diligent sun protection and you MUST use darkly tinted sunglasses until the healing process is complete.

RECOVERY

Dr. Antun will strongly recommend you follow all recovery and post-surgery instructions diligently!

An eyelid surgery procedure includes the following steps:

Step 1 – Anesthesia

Medications are administered for your comfort during the surgical procedure. The choices include intravenous sedation or general anesthesia. Your doctor will recommend the best choice for you.

Step 2 – The incision

The incision lines for eyelid surgery are designed to have the  resultant scars well concealed within the natural structures of the eyelid region.

The upper eyelid can be corrected through an incision within the natural crease on the eyelid. This allows for removal or re-positioning of fat deposits, tightening of muscles and removal of excess skin. Conditions of the lower eyelid may be corrected with an incision just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, excess skin in the lower eyelid is removed. Excess fat can be re-positioned or removed. A transconjunctival incision, created on the inside of the lower eyelid, is an alternate technique to correct lower eyelid conditions and redistribute or remove excess fat. With this technique, no skin is removed.

Step 3 – Closing the incisions

Eyelid incisions typically are closed with sutures or skin glue. Sutures are removed within one week. Dr. Rafael Antun may also suggest use of a laser or chemical peel to reduce discoloration of the lower eyelids.

Step 4 – See the results

The results of eyelid surgery will appear gradually as swelling and bruising subsides.   A smoother, better-defined eyelid and surrounding eye area will be revealed after surgery and you will notice a more alert and rejuvenated appearance.
